We gave it a B

The plot of Jayne Anne Phillips’ third novel MotherKind rather conspicuously evokes the circle of life: Events open with 30ish Kate, a Boston editor and a poet who discovers she’s pregnant just as her mother, Katherine, is diagnosed with terminal cancer. Despite passionate moments — like Katherine’s decision to undergo excruciating chemotherapy to survive until her grandchild’s birth — MotherKind isn’t exactly a tearjerker. instead, Phillips chronicles the quotidian details of Kate’s pregnancy, young motherhood, wedding, and caretaking of her own mother in prose so ornately lyrical and ruminative that it fells, if anything, deprived of emotion. The result is a lovely but occasionally overwrought ode to motherhood. B
