The label ”travel writings” on Paul Theroux’s Fresh Air Fiend: Travel Writings 1985-2000 proves wide-ranging indeed: Beyond Theroux’s more exotic journeys — like sailing down China’s Yangtze River with a bunch of American millionaires or playing Robinson Crusoe on an island in Palau — these 50 essays from the past 15 years traverse such subjects as exile, other people’s travel books, and ”Time Travel” (like the incident when Theroux was framed for plotting the assassination of an African president and kicked out of the Peace Corps). He’s most passionate, it’s clear, when he’s persnickety, as in the scathing piece, ”German Humor”. Overall, a dynamic, bracing literary itinerary. A-
