In Happy, Texas, havoc hits a small town with the arrival of two escaped cons (An Ideal Husband‘s Northam and Out of Sight‘s Zahn) posing as gay, tiny-tyke pageant consultants. First-time feature director and cowriter Mark Illsley wakes up a tired comic formula by quietly reveling in the idiosyncrasies of characters like conflicted sheriff-in-love William H. Macy. But it’s Independent Spirit award winner Zahn as the tightly wound Wayne Wayne Wayne Jr., who begrudgingly teaches little girls how to sing and dance, which brings out this movie’s gin-u-wine charm.
