As much as the 1976 recordings Spiral Scratch and Time’s Up impart about unlucky-in-love punk troubadours the Buzzcocks, they also bespeak the pervasive influence of the Sex Pistols back in the day. On Spiral, their debut EP, then-frontman Howard DeVoto’s vocals have Johnny Rotten-esque sneer, although he uses it in the service of much more personal politics. Time’s Up, originally a bootleg, finds the band honoring the hormone-crazed legacy of the Troggs with a cover of ”I Can’t Control Myself,” along with a lo-fi take on their own seminal (har, har) anthem, ”Orgasm Addict.” Spiral: B Time’s Up: B+
