Warren Ellis (a 1999 EW It Lister for Transmetropolitan) lets his mythic mystery unspool slowly, with individual stories encoded with sharp genre satire and a transcendent, prescient Big Point: Strip the nostalgic goo off the 20th century, folks, it’s time for some sober reassessment. Kudos, too, for John Cassaday’s crisp, cinematic layouts and irresistible covers. Call it The X-Files in tights — but also call Planetary provocative, eminently addictive, and top of its class. A
