The pinky ring

Posted on

Four-carat diamond engagement ring? Fuhgeddaboudit. These days the accessory of choice is the pinkie ring. Once mocked as adornment for men who use the phrase ”How you doin’?” as an endearment, the bada-bing ring is suddenly everywhere: It has been (1) a plot point in The Talented Mr. Ripley, (2) sported by Al Pacino’s newsman in The Insider, (3) de rigueur on The Sopranos, and (4) allegedly used as a bribe by Puff Daddy before his weapons possession arrest. Bulgari has even created a $169,000 ring featuring five carats’ worth of diamonds set in 18-karat gold. The bauble is a popular celeb loaner, with mambo king Lou Bega among its fans. But maybe the trend’s not as new as it seems. ”It’s the ring Al always wears for good luck,” says Insider costume designer Anna Sheppard of the actor’s signet ring. ”And try to quarrel with a star like Al Pacino. But luckily it worked for the character.”
