We gave it a B

From Frank Miller, the writer-artist of 1986’s landmark Batman epic The Dark Knight Returns, comes proof that comic books can be more than superhero fluff. 300, his award-winning 1998 series depicting a pre-a.d. battle between elite Spartan forces and a massive Persian army, has now been collected in a coffee-table book — though it’s hard to imagine who would display this blood-soaked graphic novella in their living room, even with the Pottery Barn packaging. The format flatters Miller’s meticulous designs and Lynn Varley’s inventive watercolors but also amplifies 300‘s weaknesses: archaic dialogue, some visual grandstanding, and heavy-handed storytelling. It feels like a fascinating anecdote blown out of proportion. Still, better this than Spandex. B
