We review ”Los Gringos,” an animated samurai-cowboy spoof on the Web

Los Gringos

Los Gringos (www.mediatrip.com)
Samurai and cowboys have always been thematic brothers, but the sword and the six-shooter rarely star in films together — and none are as rip-roaring and retinally stimulating as Los Gringos. This five-minute spoof trailer — an Akira Kurosawa-meets-Sergio Leone spaghetti Western with Toy Story-style 3-D animation — is about a samuai (voiced by Pat Morita) and a cowboy (Charles Napier) out to reform a lawless town. The ensuing battle pays homage to everything from Clint Eastwood shoot-’em-ups to the slow-motion bullets of The Matrix, and the script is shot through with rollicking sight gags. There’s even a requisite dramatic segue in which the two men realize their ”honor” is at stake. Los Gringos, which appeared at Sundance before MediaTrip grabbed it, was created by animators (rumored to be moonlighting from top studios) who insist on remaining anonymous — but deserve to be famous.
