We gave it a B-

In this adaptation of Hornby’s 1995 cult comic novel, John Cusack stars as music-geek hero Rob Gordon, a thirtysomething record-store owner who adores vinyl, habitually makes top five lists, and pines for his ex (Hjejle). ”Disney gave it to me because they know what a music snob I am,” says Cusack. ”I mean, I like everything from the Cramps to Mozart.”

What he didn’t like was the screenplay. ”First they gave us Scott Rosenberg’s draft — which no one liked — so we rewrote it,” says Cusack, who penned a new version with ”Grosse Pointe Blank” collaborators D.V. DeVincentis and Steve Pink. ”Then the Writers Guild screwed us and gave Scott credit, too.” Retorts Rosenberg: ”I don’t want to get in a pissing contest, but having been burned by [credit] arbitration, I did some soul searching and decided to work with the system and get makeup credit.”

Fans have their own script notes; although the movie follows the novel closely, the locale has been changed from London to Chicago. ”It works beautifully, but people are furious about the switch,” says Frears, who directed Cusack in 1990’s ”The Grifters.” ”They consider it a peculiarly English novel. And it’s not, but they come up and tell me it is. Loudly.” BUZZ FACTOR: 6
