Writer Hanif Kureishi (”My Beautiful Laundrette”) adds to his celebrated canon with My Son the Fanatic, an insightful tale of Parvez (Puri), a Pakistani chauffeur who struggles with assimilating into working-class Britain — and with his wildly fundamentalist son — and lands in the comforting arms of a prostitute (Griffiths). This quirky drama may very well be forgotten come Oscar time, but Puri gives a truly gilded performance.

Reel Goodies At the airport, Parvez meets a passenger named Schitz (Stellan Skarsgård) while bearing a sign that misspells his client’s name in the worst way. The Last Detail ”Fanatic” is a Best Foreign Film nominee in this year’s Independent Spirit Awards.
