GAME//MTV MUSIC GENERATOR (Codemasters/Jester Interactive, $39.99) Puff Daddy and Fatboy Slim had better watch their backs: You could be the biggest threat to their sampled-music empires armed with only a PlayStation and Generator, a music-creation tool (read: not a game) that offers 24 channels, more than 3,000 canned instrumental sounds, and 1,500 musical riffs. Since this is MTV product, Beethoven fans will be sadly disappointed: Most of the snippets are rock or dance music (techno, drum-and-bass, etc.). While cutting and pasting the prefab sounds can produce danceable tunes, Generator’s greatest strength is that with patience, you can alter each of the sounds to create completely original songs. Sampling fiends can lift 30 seconds of music from their CDs; other options include simple video-making tools and a multiplayer jam-session mode. No threat to professional music-editing software, Generator is instead a fun, functional, and staggeringly original title for PlayStation owners who are ready to graduate from blasting aliens to chasing after Grammys.
