Anthology: The Sounds of Science surveys the career of the archetypal funky white boys — the Beastie Boys — and makes clear that while their music sometimes followed trends, more often it set them. Arena rap, acid jazz, hardcore punk, funk-metal, and even country all get thrown into the Beasties’ cultural Cuisinart.
The result is startlingly consistent; despite gaps, the unreleased rarities actually sound as great as the hits. Strange yet wonderfully accessible, the Boys demonstrate their greatest, most infectious quality — that they have unbridled creativity down to a science.
