We gave it an A
Sequestered at her family’s Maine estate in an environmentally ravaged near-future, Susan, the narrator of this engrossing psychological novel, uses journals, letters, and trial transcripts to reconstruct the disappearance and possible murder of her mother, Carole, during (surprise! considering the title’s The Walking Tour) a walking tour of Wales.
But the mystery plays only a small role here: The focal point is the walking tour and the wicked comedy of manners played out between two married couples — glamorous, schizophrenic Carole and philandering tech entrepreneur Bobby; and Carole’s best friend and her husband. Davis fantastically incorporates medieval Welsh myth to illuminate both the bonds and the betrayals of partnership.
