We gave it a B

Rock & roll literature? It seems like an oxymoron, but Shiner pulls it off in this artful fictional chronicle of a singer-songwriter, Laurie Moss, and her quest for pop stardom. The story succeeds precisely because Shiner doesn’t play Laurie’s ambitions for sleazy melodrama (though a little more debauchery would certainly make for quicker page turning). No matter — the point isn’t to titillate with tales of rock bacchanalia but to explore a young woman’s collision with a business whose rules are not as pure as her own. When Laurie falls for a craggy, washed-up pop guitarist, it doesn’t matter whether she’ll end up with him, it’s whether she’ll end up like him. Don’t expect the answer to be as neatly drawn as an episode of Behind the Music. B
