Free Money is a first-rate oddity. Thomas Haden Church and the newly christened Charles Sheen play the hapless sons-in-law of Brando, a homicidal prison warden who exacts home discipline with a cattle prod. In hopes of freeing themselves from his rule, they try to rob a train. This is a screwball heist farce of the Coen Brothers school, but it’s too diffuse and thus too screwy. On the other hand, Brando, who flails about like a deranged walrus, hasn’t seemed so unabashedly playful since Guys and Dolls. REEL GOODIES (1:23) Brando engages in hand-to-hand combat with Mira Sorvino’s FBI agent.
THE LAST DETAIL A cameo by Martin Sheen brings him and Brando together for an Apocalypse Now reunion.
