MARRIED Actress Vanessa Williams, 36, and L.A. Laker Rick Fox, 30, Sept. 26, at a celebration in New York City (they wed privately this summer). It’s Fox’s first marriage, Williams’ second.

SPLITS Time of Your Life starlet Jennifer Love Hewitt, 20, and MTV VJ Carson Daly, 26, have called off their party of two after more than a year. Hewitt is reportedly now dating That ’70s Show’s Wilmer Valderrama, 19 (though their publicists deny it). FIGHTS Chat host Kathie Lee Gifford, 46, was charged by the National Labor Committee with using underpaid workers in El Salvador to make her Wal-Mart apparel line in unfit conditions (Gifford faced similar charges three years ago). In a statement, she said, ”We instructed our independent monitoring company” to send inspectors. Says the NLC, ”Portraying herself as a victim takes the focus off workers.” At a news conference on workers’ rights, Gifford’s husband, Frank, defended her, saying ”You have assassinated her character.”

LAWSUITS The World Wrestling Federation won a temporary restraining order against Playboy magazine, Sept. 22, in New York City. An October special issue featuring former WWF wrestler Rena Mero, 32, as her character Sable prompted the WWF to file suit Sept. 20, stating that Playboy ”unlawfully misappropriated its ‘Sable’ trademark.” (A WWF-authorized layout of Sable appeared in April’s Playboy, though a subsequent appearance was unsanctioned.) ”We are delighted that the court recognized our rights to intellectual property,” said a WWF lawyer. The cover will be modified, says a Playboy rep…. A $10 million breach-of-contract lawsuit filed in April 1998 by producer David Stutman against actors Leonardo DiCaprio (Titanic), 24, and Tobey Maguire (Pleasantville), 25, was settled out of court for an undisclosed sum, Sept. 24, in L.A. The suit accused DiCaprio and Maguire of blocking the release of Don’s Plum, a 1996 indie film in which they appear, threatening distributors with ”adverse consequences,” according to court papers. The film will be distributed outside North America.

ARRESTED Muscled-up actor Jean-Claude Van Damme (Universal Soldier), 38, Sept. 23, in West Hollywood, on suspicion of drunk driving after his car was observed weaving erratically. A hearing is set for Oct. 8. Van Damme’s spokesperson had no comment…. Diva Diana Ross, 55, for allegedly frisking a female security guard, Sept. 22, in London. After Ross set off a metal detector at Heathrow Airport, the guard did a body check. The songstress complained to airport officials that her breast had been touched; she then allegedly grabbed the guard’s breast in turn. Ross was held by police for several hours and released with a warning. ”I don’t mind being touched — but not in this way,” Ross said in a statement.
