Unapologetically romantic, Seidner’s sumptuous photographs in Portraits pay homage to the work of turn-of-the-century American artist John Singer Sargent, who painted the world’s elite in all its glory. Heading into a new century, Seidner has placed modern-day socialites and celebrities in period costumes against backdrops dripping with rich luxury. Pia Getty is transformed into a Goyaesque Spanish princess; Angèle Parlange becomes a striking Madame X; and Honor Fraser dresses like an Edith Wharton heroine. Seidner, who died just before the book was completed, caught their beauty with intelligence and a refreshing lack of irony.
