SCARE TACTICS

Who said Halloween comes but once a year? Currently haunting multiplexes is the unseasonably creepy one-two punch of The Sixth Sense and The Blair Witch Project. In its opening weekend, the Bruce Willis thriller pulled in $26.7 million, leaping past 1993’s The Fugitive as the biggest August debut ever. But The Sixth Sense couldn’t touch Willis’ best bow, Armageddon’s $36.1 million. Meanwhile, with its $80 million four-week gross, Blair Witch continues its reign of terror as this season’s biggest sleeper. The weekend’s other newcomers were a mixed bag of soggy tricks (Mystery Men, The Iron Giant, Dick) and a more upbeat treat (The Thomas Crown Affair).
