Ricky Martin's album makes music history

RECORD MAKERS With sales reaching 5 million, Ricky Martin‘s self-titled album has become the music industry’s best-selling album for a Latin artist, according to the Recording Industry Association of America’s July certifications. ”Ricky Martin” tops the list of six records by Latin performers (including Elvis Crespo and Alejandro Fernandez) that received gold and platinum awards last month for their Spanish-spiced CDs — that’s the largest group of Latin record certifications in RIAA history.

CASTING Brendan Fraser is in final talks to star in Dimension Films’ ”The Wedding Planner” opposite Jennifer Lopez. The romantic comedy about a single wedding planner who falls in love with a customer’s fiancĂ©, starts shooting in late November…. Sean Penn and Sarah Polley (”Go”) are close to joining the cast of ”The Weight of Water.” Directed by Kathryn Bigelow, the drama is an adaptation of best-selling author Anita Shreve’s novel about two couples on a boat trip to a Scandinavian island. So far, the French-produced film has no U.S. distributor…. Pop songstress Monicawill star in the ABC Wonderful World of Disney movie ”Angel of Mine,” about an aspiring singer who’s advised by a dead rock star-turned-guardian angel. ”Angel” is based on the 1992 novel ”Strut” and will be produced by Whitney Houston, who produced and starred in ABC/Disney’s 1997 ratings grabber ”Cinderella.”

TUBE WATCH George Clooney may not return to ”ER” as a special guest this season after all. At an awards dinner in Clooney’s native Kentucky on Saturday, the hunky star said no one from the series has talked to him about doing episodes to help with Julianna Margulies’ expected exit from the show in 2000.

HOSPITALIZED Jerry Lewis was hospitalized Sunday in Darwin, Australia, due to an unspecified virus. Lewis had to cancel shows in Darwin and Adelaide early this week, but according to the Associated Press, the 73-year-old comedian plans to restart his Aussie tour in Sydney this Thursday.

LEGAL BRIEFS Another weekend, another ODB arrest. Early Saturday, the troublemaking rapper — who was arrested just a few days ago for bouncing his bail check in Los Angeles — was arrested in Queens after NYPD officers stopped him for running a red light and then found a stash of drugs in his car. ODB, a.k.a. Russell Jones, was charged with driving with a suspended license, criminal possession of a controlled substance, and unlawful possession of marijuana. ODB was released Sunday after posting bail, according to MTV News…. Busta Rhymes, whose real name is Trevor George Smith, has been slapped with a paternity suit by 25-year-old Jill Miskelly, who claims her daughter is Rhymes’ child. A paternity suit reportedly proved that chances are 99.9 percent that Rhymes is the father. Rhymes has been making child-support payments of $1250 a month since last January, but Miskelly’s suit says that is not enough.
