Down in the Delta

In acclaimed poet Maya Angelou’s feature directorial debut Down in the Delta, an alcoholic single mother (Woodard) leaves inner-city Chicago with her kids and finds salvation and respect in rural Mississippi. The redemptive power of country living isn’t exactly groundbreaking subject matter, and Myron Goble’s script is full of uninspired melodramatic devices and awkward symbols. But all the autistic daughters and invalid aunts in the world can’t detract from Woodard’s riveting performance. B-
