Here’s the recipe for a certain kind of detective novel: Take a quaint town, throw in a dastardly crime, invent a determined investigator, and fill the pages with talk. Call it the Agatha Christie tradition. It’s a departure for Minette Walters, whose previous five books have all been dark, tense psychological dramas, but one that suits her cerebral style. The town in question is located on England’s Dorset coast; the crime is the grisly rape and murder of a young pregnant mother, and the detective is one Nick Ingram, an accomplished but low-key policeman. Suspects abound in The Breaker, but you know the dogged Ingram will get his man. Hercule Poirot he’s not, but he tries. B
