This package features a reproduction of the first, 1938 Superman comic book, a handsome little statue of the Man of Steel, and a book, Superman: The Golden Age, by comics historian Daniels. His text is hobbled by the fact that Superman’s story is a dull one: As teens, creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster conceived of their hero, a kind of Frankenstein’s monster for the forces of good. Their idea caught on quickly; Superman spawned the superhero craze, including the more interesting Batman. But the book is beautifully designed by Chip Kidd, whose own 1996 Batman Collected glowed with a learned obsessiveness that a goody-goody hero like Supey simply cannot inspire.
