Actress Ellen Barkin, 45, filed for divorce from actor Gabriel Byrne, 49, after nearly 11 years of marriage, May 20, in L.A., citing irreconcilable differences. The couple have been separated for over five years. Their son, Jack, 9, and daughter, Romy, 6, live with Barkin.
The executor of the estate of slain comedian Phil Hartman filed suit for undisclosed damages against Pfizer, maker of the antidepressant Zoloft, May 28, in L.A. Gregory Omdahl, brother of Hartman’s wife, Brynn, contends that side effects his sister suffered while taking the drug caused her to shoot and kill Hartman and then herself in the couple’s Encino, Calif., home a year ago. (Along with taking Zoloft, alcohol and cocaine were found in Brynn Hartman’s system after her death.) The suit also alleges malpractice by Dr. Arthur Sorosky, Hartman’s son’s physician, who allegedly gave her a sample of the medication. Pfizer, in a statement, says the allegation ”has no basis in scientific or medical fact.” Sorosky’s lawyer says the case ”has no merit.”… ”Sexploitation” movie czar Russ Meyer, 77, was granted a restraining order against his girlfriend, Debra Masson, 39, May 28, in L.A. Meyer, the producer-director behind such trash classics as Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!, claims Masson attacked him May 26 while he was sleeping in his Hollywood Hills home, cutting and bruising his face. Meyer was released after treatment at L.A.’s St. Joseph Medical Center. Masson, who pleaded not guilty to criminal charges of spousal battery (though the couple isn’t married), elder abuse, and battery in a dating relationship, awaits a June 22 trial. She was unavailable for comment.
Rocker Lenny Kravitz, 34, from a backstage collapse caused by heat exhaustion and dehydration, May 30, in Holmdel, N.J. Kravitz was four songs into a show when he succumbed to the 90-degree heat. He was treated on the scene…. Diminutive actor Billy Barty (Willow), 74, from a fractured eye socket and bruises suffered after a fall, May 28, in Garden Grove, Calif. The 3-foot-10-inch Barty was making an outdoor appearance at the Garden Grove Strawberry Festival when the motor scooter he was riding flipped over and sent him hurtling down a set of concrete stairs. Barty was treated on the scene, hospitalized overnight, and released.
Novelist Alice Adams, 72, of apparent heart failure, May 27, in San Francisco. In five short-story collections and 10 novels, including the 1984 best-seller Superior Women, Adams crafted frank portraits of flawed women.
