A Dummies guide by way of the Spice Girls, Development Girl attempts to offer a smart and sassy blueprint to breaking into the production side of the movie biz. Unfortunately, Hadley Davis’ often generic advice and girl-powah attitude wear thin about halfway through, when the prose begins to read like an intercepted seventh-grade note (”On the D Tip: Good things happen to those who dress well”). If you know nothing, Development Girl might be a good starting point — there are useful tidbits scattered throughout and the extensive glossary is a neophyte’s must-read — but taken as a whole, the book mirrors the most vulgar attributes of the new young Hollywood: entitled, empty, and grimly ambitious.
