It’s been 30 years since a buff Charlton Heston warned, ”Get your stinkin’ paws off me, you damn dirty ape!” in Planet of the Apes. Three decades and a host of A-list attachments (Oliver Stone, Philip Noyce, Arnold Schwarzenegger) later, Hollywood is still monkeying around with a remake. (It’s long been in development at Twentieth Century Fox.) But is it greenlight-worthy? At an Aug. 27 commemorative screening in Beverly Hills, we asked the original stars what they thought:

RODDY McDOWALL (CORNELIUS)
”It depends on who does it and how. I’d consider it if it was a worthwhile remake. I’m glad it’s so vibrantly of interest. It still has a hold on people.”

KIM HUNTER (ZIRA)
”I don’t know why they’d remake a piece of film history. I can’t fathom who might play my role, but I certainly wouldn’t be in it.”

CHARLTON HESTON (TAYLOR/BRIGHT EYES)
”It’s remakable. Schwarzenegger could play my role. I’ve been told he’s muscular enough. You think I’m going to put on one of those monkey suits? Not on your life.”
