First, a policy statement: I would pay cash money to watch Duchovny read from the phone book. That said, the actor does a fine (if understated) job in this predictable noir wannabe, a critical and box office bomb upon its big-screen release last fall. He plays a doctor-turned-junkie who gets embroiled in the affairs of a crime boss (Hutton, who gives a performance that’s far too controlled to be convincing). Mercifully, however, the random shootings and FBI sting operation that inevitably ensue are accompanied by a few good one-liners and a minimum of car chases. In fact, the modest scale of Playing God‘s small-bore action makes it seem much more at home on home video. A satisfactory evening’s rental, even for non-Duchovniks. B-
