Batman: The Animated Series
Of all the superheroes who have escaped the culty confines of comic-bookdom and made their way into the mainstream, none have suffered more indignity than Batman. From the stone-faced Columbia serials of the ’40s, through the high camp of the 1960s TV series, right up to 1997’s flatulent Batman & Robin, the Dark Knight has endured, his grim potential unrealized. The exception is Batman: The Animated Series (Cartoon Network, weekdays, 6-7 p.m.). With its stunning noir-deco art direction and anime-worthy visuals, it’s beautifully realized drama.
