'PILGRIM' PROGRESS

Posted on

Roughly 168,000 Americans said just what John Wayne would — ”Hey, Pilgrim” — as Eric Clapton’s first collection of original songs in nine years debuted in the No. 4 spot, an impressive if not necessarily Plymouthian landing. The other top 10 debut was from a complete newcomer — not unusual for word-of-mouth-fueled rap acts but highly irregular for a pop singer with only one single to her name. That’d be Natalie Imbruglia, whose Left of the Middle entered straight up at No. 10 after an SNL appearance and more than a month of solid radio play of her smash, ”Torn.” Higher up, Madonna had a surprisingly strong second week (224,000 copies) and once more kept Celine from her No. 2 berth right, though Titanic (448,000) sailed on uncontested.
