LEO: THE DINERO

Posted on

All Leo, all the time. That was the battle cry from the moviegoing throngs this week as Titanic edged out The Man in the Iron Mask in a first-place photo finish at the box office. When all was said and done, DiCaprio the doomed steerage passenger bested DiCaprio the culottes-wearing king by about $300,000. In addition to fending off its toughest competition yet, Titanic surpassed Star Wars as the all-time No. 1 domestic box office champ. Over in indieland, more records were broken: Good Will Hunting eked past Pulp Fiction to become Miramax’s biggest Stateside earner, and last week The Apostle leapfrogged Secrets & Lies as October’s most lucrative flick. And in case you were wondering, Carrot Top’s Chairman of the Board opened to a less-than-knee-slappin’ $180,000 in 196 theaters (averaging just $925 per screen) for 30th place.
