VARIOUS ARTISTS Where Have All the Flowers Gone: The Songs of Pete Seeger (Appleseed) This two-disc tribute to the venerable folk patriarch boasts an exemplary assortment of rock and folk performers. But it also embodies many of the same contradictions as its subject, frequently undercutting its activist passion with doctrinaire sanctimoniousness. Still, sensitive interpretations by Bruce Springsteen, Billy Bragg, Dick Gaughan, and actor Tim Robbins transcend folkie dogma to make an eloquent case for Seeger’s stature as a cultural hero. B
