DOGWATCH Sam Elliott, Esai Morales, Paul Sorvino (1997, Real Entertainment, R, $94.99) Elliott’s embittered San Francisco police detective brings down a world of hurt when he tries to avenge his partner’s death, mistakenly kills an innocent man, then discovers he has eliminated the only person who could have helped him expose the crooked cops behind his partner’s demise. Leaving such a dubious hero to wallow in his own quagmire, this uncommonly solid cable thriller finds more moral shadings than cv most recent, so-called film noir. Unfortunately, the filmmakers choose to shoot their way out of their well-plotted mess. As Dirty Harry once said, ”…nothing wrong with shooting long as the right people get shot.” But in this case, it’s the easy way out. C+
