We gave it a B+

resh on the spindly heels of Love, Loss, and What I Wore, the author’s surprise hit about the pivotal items of clothing in her life, comes What We Do for Love this wry, rueful catalog of the very paramours those rags helped her land. It’s just as whimsically illustrated, but the story line is of a more somber cut. Men expose themselves to her in movie theaters, intimidate her into marrying them, and prove — unlike her garments — generally disappointing. (Except for Frank Sinatra.) Beckerman recounts reckless benders, wrist slashings, grim psychiatrists — all in the service of cads and dullards — with the kind of light wistfulness that only a happy ending could enable. B+
