A truly funny valentine that won Australian director Shirley Barrett a Camera d’Or at Cannes, Love Serenade exposes the follies of romantic need with wicked delight. When Ken Sherry (George Shevtsov), a down-on-his-luck disc jockey, blows into an outback town and fills the airwaves with Barry White and morose confessions, a pair of love-starved sisters leap to succumb to his reptilian charms. Sherry welcomes both of them, seducing the gawky 20-year-old (Miranda Otto) and then dumping her for her casserole-happy older sister (Rebecca Frith), who mistakenly equates sex with a marriage proposal. The ending is as merciless and satisfying as Cupid landing an arrow, then giving it a twist. A
