Silverstone is all too convincing as a petulant rich kid who stages her own kidnapping to get her daddy’s attention, while Del Toro is just plain distracting as the mumbling car thief who accidentally sets the abduction in motion when he steals her BMW. We’re supposed to enjoy all the fussing and fighting as these two grudgingly fall in love while fleeing cops, other car thieves, and Daddy’s personal enforcer (Walken). But there’s no wit, chemistry, or plot momentum in Excess Baggage. It’s best to hit fast- forward and slow down only for Walken, whose quietly quirky line readings should teach Del Toro a thing or two about stealing a scene. C-
