Codeine Diary: A Memoir

type:
Book
Current Status:
In Season
author:
Tom Andrews
genre:
Self-Help and Psychology, Pop Culture

We gave it a B

Poet Tom Andrews has made a career of beating the odds: A hemophiliac for whom any violent motion can cause uncontrollable internal bleeding, he established a Guinness world record for clapping at 11, raced motorcycles, played in a punk band, and dodged a 90 percent risk of HIV via his blood infusions. Andrews began this memoir while recovering from a “bleed” in 1989. A funny, feisty account of hemophilia and family illness (ironically, his brother had a fatal kidney disorder that made his blood clot), Codeine Diary: A Memoir is marred by Andrews’ compulsive allusions to other writers as well as a collegiate self-interview, which forms a silly conclusion to an otherwise dignified book.
