VISITORS Anita Brookner (Random House, $23) With her 17th book, Anita Brookner proves her absolute mastery of the modern drawing-room novel. The carefully plotted life of Dorothea May, an elderly widow and loner, is suddenly thrown into disarray by a houseguest named Steve, who is set to be best man at the wedding of Dorothea’s great-niece. Steve is not a very disruptive person, but the very idea of him in her house is enough to jolt Dorothea out of her happy, balanced existence and into uncomfortable terrain: that of personal interaction. As the wedding draws nearer, the kids act as unwitting catalysts, sparking self-assessment in their elders. Many minute epiphanies, exquisitely observed. A- — Vanessa V. Friedman
