BROKEN ENGLISH Julian Arahanga, Aleksandra Vujcic (1996, Columbia TriStar, R, $98.99) He’s a lovestruck Maori cook, unaware that his paramour is expecting a child. She’s a Croatian refugee living in New Zealand, tormented by a father (”Before the Rain’s” Rade Serbedzija) who’s intent on keeping the family blood ethnically pure.
You’re half asleep on your couch, wondering why somebody thought that this story needed to be told just one more time. Only the unusual geographical combination prevents it from occupying the penthouse apartment in Triteville; great performances might have saved it, but the cast is as uneven as the English their characters speak.
