DJ SHADOW Preemptive Strike (MoWax/ffrr) This second album by the Bay Area’s premier DJ/sound shaper isn’t as fluid and seamless as Endtroducing…, his debut, and with good reason. A collection of early work, it finds Shadow still figuring out the best ways to stitch together hip-hop drums, mellow saxes, blaxploitation licks, unearthly choirs, and movie-dialogue snatches. But when the combination clicks — on the discordant garage techno of ”High Noon” or the four-part ”What Does Your Soul Look Like” — he comes close enough to predicting his later brilliance. B
