We gave it an A-

Available once again, director Hector Babenco’s Pixote (1981, New Yorker, unrated, $89.95, subtitled) has lost none of its blunt power. The briskly intense drama follows a crew of Sao Paulo runaways and thieves, including the 10-year-old title character (Fernando Ramos da Silva), who escape from a reform school where rape, drugs, and sadistic guards are the norm to an even more sordid life outside. Babenco (Kiss of the Spider Woman) coaxes miraculous performances, mostly from nonactors — especially Da Silva, who ironically found a real life of crime irresistible. He was arrested for armed robbery in 1984 and shot to death three years later during a holdup. Pixote is his sad and shining legacy. A-
