Long stigmatized due to his El-Lay soft-rock image, Jackson Browne is ripe for critical reappraisal, but the rather arbitrary collection on The Next Voice You Hear: The Best of Jackson Browne only scratches the surface of his lyrically brilliant — if musically bland — body of work. Still, classics like ”These Days” and ”Fountain of Sorrow” retain their devastating resonance, and two new songs demonstrate that Browne can still summon up a similar level of eloquence when he’s in the mood. B-
