You can keep all your fancy-schmancy computerized special effects: Nothing, but nothing, evokes childhood Saturday afternoons camped in front of the idiot box like two guys in rubber monster suits duking it out over a cardboard Tokyo. Gamera: The Guardian of the Universe honors that credo: The latest in a long line of Japanese films about an immense, fanged, fire-pooting turtle manages to utilize modern F/X while keeping it all looking exquisitely fake. For the record, this is a remake of 1967’s Gamera vs. Gyaos (the latter being three carnivorous hand puppets, er, prehistoric birds); it’s as giddily po-faced as its ’60s forebears, and Steven Seagal’s daughter, Fujitani, makes her screen debut as a winsome teen psychically bonded to the big fella. Gamera‘s best joke? She’s a better actor than Dad. B-
