HEY, HEY WE’RE THE MONKEES Micky Dolenz, Davy Jones, Mike Nesmith, Peter Tork (1997, Rhino, unrated, $19.95) You don’t have to be a closet Monkees fan to get into this expanded-for-video TV retrospective. In fact, nonfans might even gain new respect for the group that got its start by playing a rock group on TV. Combining clips from their Help!-inspired comedy show with concert footage and recent interviews, Hey, Hey We’re the Monkees relates how two struggling folksingers and two former child actors evolved into a real band (and truly funny clowns). It also preserves some priceless trivia, including glimpses of an old Monkees opening act named Jimi Hendrix and of a young Jack Nicholson, who cowrote their infamous psychedelic art film, Head. Who knew the Monkees were so cool? B
