Video Review: 'The Best of the Doors'

Looking to ride the coattails of Elektra Records’ upcoming box set of the mythic California band, Universal has cobbled together an anthology from its previous Doors videos, Dance on Fire, The Soft Parade, and Live From the Hollywood Bowl. The presumptive sweeteners of the deal are a handful of unreleased clips. Of those, a hotel sequence in which Doors Robby Krieger and Ray Manzarek try to teach a befuddled Jim Morrison how to play poker and a 1968 performance of ”Hello, I Love You” on the streets of Hamburg, Germany, make for interesting arcana. But the hokey music-video treatments of ”Gloria” and ”Strange Days” are an embarrassing sight. C
