Double Team

Current Status:
In Season
Jean-Claude Van Damme, Dennis Rodman, Mickey Rourke
Hark Tsui

We gave it a B-

Obviously, the Muscles from Brussels hopes to up the quality of his films by hiring Hong Kong directors: John Woo for 1993’s Hard Target, Ringo Lam for 1996’s Maximum Risk, and now Tsui Hark for Double Team. But he just drags them down to his level. Despite stunning camera work, whiplash editing, and one jaw-dropping encounter with a baddie who packs a knife in his foot, nothing here recalls the wit of Hark classics like Once Upon a Time in China and Peking Opera Blues (available via mail order or at adventurous urban video stores). Rodman makes an ingratiating big-screen debut, but his hair is even scarier than villain Mickey Rourke’s acting. Note to Van Damme: Next time, spend your money on the script. D+
