”The Deep End of the Ocean” made movie news the week of September 12, 1997

Although being chosen for Oprah Winfrey’s Book Club can spike sales of a book as much as 1,000 percent, it’s no guarantee that a sweet movie deal will follow. So far, only Jacquelyn Mitchard’s The Deep End of the Ocean, the club’s first selection, is being made into a feature film (starring Michelle Pfeiffer as the mom coping with her child’s disappearance, the movie starts shooting next month). As for the other six selections so far, only Sheri Reynolds’ The Rapture of Canaan and Wally Lamb’s She’s Come Undone have movie options pending — and both those deals were signed before the books were chosen by Winfrey. The current selection, Mary McGarry Morris’ Songs in Ordinary Time, has just been snapped up by CBS as a movie-of-the-week.
