Posted on

OUTSTANDING DRAMA
(Chicago Hope; ER; Law & Order; NYPD Blue; The X-Files)
Who Will Win: ER
Who Should Win: The X-Files
Overlooked: The never-nominated Party of Five; the criminally neglected Homicide: Life on the Street

OUTSTANDING COMEDY
(Frasier; The Larry Sanders Show; Mad About You; Seinfeld; 3rd Rock From the Sun)
Will: Frasier (for a record-breaking fourth year in a row)
Should: Sanders, which has racked up 46 nominations over the years but just one win (Rip Torn for supporting actor)
Overlooked: NewsRadio, for goodness’ sake

OUTSTANDING ACTRESS, DRAMA
(X-Files‘ Gillian Anderson; Touched by an Angel‘s Roma Downey; Hope‘s Christine Lahti; ER‘s Julianna Margulies and Sherry Stringfield)
Will: Lahti (snubbed last year)
Should: Anderson, who proved her acting chops with those cancer episodes
Overlooked: Murder One‘s Mary McCormack (who deserves an award just for putting up with Howard Stern in Private Parts)

OUTSTANDING ACTRESS, COMEDY
(Ellen‘s Ellen DeGeneres; The Nanny‘s Fran Drescher; Mad‘s Helen Hunt; Home Improvement‘s Patricia Richardson; Cybill‘s Cybill Shepherd)
Will: The safe Hunt
Should: Out and improved Ellen
Overlooked: Moesha‘s natural, never-nom’d Brandy Norwood

OUTSTANDING ACTOR, DRAMA
(X-Files‘ David Duchovny; ER‘s Anthony Edwards; NYPD’s Dennis Franz and Jimmy Smits; Law & Order‘s Sam Waterston)
Will: Two-time winner Franz
Should: The quietly excellent Waterston
Overlooked: Party of Five‘s Scott Wolf is handicapped by a ”teen” show

OUTSTANDING ACTOR, COMEDY
(Spin City‘s Michael J. Fox; Frasier‘s Kelsey Grammer; 3rd Rock‘s John Lithgow; Mad‘s Paul Reiser; Sanders‘ Garry Shandling)
Will: Industry fave Lithgow
Should: Four-time actor nominee Shandling, the best bastard on TV
Overlooked: Everybody Loves Raymond‘s menschy Ray Romano

SUPPORTING ACTRESS, COMEDY
(Cybill‘s Christine Baranski; Larry Sanders‘ Janeane Garofalo; 3rd Rock‘s Kristen Johnston; Friends‘ Lisa Kudrow; Seinfeld‘s Julia Louis-Dreyfus)
Will: Last year’s champ Louis-Dreyfus
Should: Louis-Dreyfus, if only for her dancing
Overlooked: Frasier‘s oft-overshadowed Peri Gilpin

SUPPORTING ACTRESS, DRAMA
(NYPD‘s Kim Delaney; ER‘s Laura Innes, CCH Pounder, and Gloria Reuben; Touched by an Angel‘s Della Reese)
Will: First-time nominee Delaney
Should: Reuben, thanks to her powerful AIDS story line
Overlooked: Michelle Forbes, Homicide’s edgy coroner

SUPPORTING ACTOR, COMEDY
(Seinfeld‘s Jason Alexander and Michael Richards; Frasier‘s David Hyde Pierce; Sanders‘ Jeffrey Tambor and Rip Torn)
Will: Alexander
Should: Alexander. Amazingly, TV’s No. 1 whiner has never nabbed the prize.
Overlooked: NewsRadio‘s splendidly out-there Andy Dick no doubt scared the judges

SUPPORTING ACTOR, DRAMA
(Chicago Hope‘s Adam Arkin and Hector Elizondo; ER‘s Eriq La Salle and Noah Wyle; NYPD‘s Nicholas Turturro)
Will: La Salle
Should: La Salle — runner-up in TV’s best-bastard category
Overlooked: Homicide‘s Kyle Secor, whose showier TV partner (Andre Braugher) inevitably gets the attention
