We gave it a B-

How could one not be utterly charmed by this gentle French comedy-drama about a successful but miserably unhappy salesman (Daniel Auteuil) whose life is changed when he befriends a young man (Pascal Duquenne, who has Down syndrome)? Easy. While the two stars in The Eighth Day, who shared a Cannes acting award last year, are indeed wonderful, the same can’t always be said of the film, which is often too aggressively heart-warming, schmaltzy score and all. Still, when director Jaco Van Dormael (Toto the Hero) relaxes his sledgehammer touch, Day does have its moments of poetic and touching grace. B-
