Pretty Woman

The most inexplicable hit of the ’90s, Pretty Woman, returns to laser in what’s being billed as the director’s cut, which is to say that eight minutes of inconsequential footage (Richard Gere and Julia Roberts’ exchanging longing glances on horseback is the highlight) have been restored for no discernible reason. The disc sounds fine, the letterboxed transfer is particularly crisp, and (for anyone who cares) director Garry Marshall drones on endlessly on a secondary audio channel. Nowhere, however, does he ponder whether making a glossy romantic comedy about an L.A. streetwalker could be socially irresponsible — or at least a bad influence on Hugh Grant and Eddie Murphy. C+
