Did moviegoers avoid this Terms of Endearment sequel because it was so belated, or because they assumed no sequel would measure up to the 1983 original? Either way, they undervalued The Evening Star. Based on Larry McMurtry’s novel, this deluxe soap continues the saga of unsinkable Aurora Greenway (a once again dazzling MacLaine), who lost her daughter in the last film but gained three messed-up grandkids. As her rebellious granddaughter, Melanie, a too-shrill Lewis is no Debra Winger; and as Aurora’s old flame, Jack Nicholson does only an extended walk-on. No matter. MacLaine alone justifies the rental price. Warning: The mortality rate escalates as this tearjerker rolls along. Get out your hankies and sob away — at home no one will hear you. B-
