Exec producer Roger Corman’s goofy, punk-laced send-up of ’50s teen movies has been hard to find on video for a while, so this new laser edition — with a letterboxed transfer supervised by director Allan Arkush — would be welcome even without all the cool bonuses: trailers, an interview with Corman, and audio-only versions of songs cut from the Ramones concert seen in the film. There’s also funny, insightful commentary from Arkush and screenwriter Richard Whitley, among others, but one central irony remains unremarked: The commercial failure of Rock ‘n’ Roll High School, which was supposed be a punk A Hard Day’s Night, gave big record companies an excuse to stop signing punk bands.
